September Self Defense Update

Hi friends!

If we haven’t met, my name is Matty. I live in Logan Square and I’m the admin/secretary/treasurer/VP of marketing for Basement Self Defense Class. I started organizing these community self defense classes a few months ago with the help of our two brilliant instructors Chi and Aspen.

Upcoming classes: 

• Monday, September 8 @ 7pm

• Monday, September 22 @ 7pm

Each class is $15 and takes place in the basement of Grace Church. You are totally welcome to just show up to class and pay there or you can pre-register via this google form for September classes. As always, trans folks fight for free!

Pre-registering just helps us get an idea of how many people are attending!

Extra exciting news: we got stickers! So make sure to grab one at the next class!

What else, what else:

• I’m putting on a staged version of The Lizzie McGuire Movie at Color Club on Friday, September 26 and Saturday, September 27! Wear your best Roman vaca/Y2K-inspired look <3

• Love Aspen’s classes? Drake consulting offers ally and equity trainings on a variety of topics including lgbtqia+ identities, neurodivergence, and shared responsibility leadership. Trainings are hands on and adaptable to the needs of your team, office, or club. Contact [email protected] to learn more.

• Strange Fox Fighting Arts is teaching a class on stick fighting and community defense at Grace Church September 20 and September 21.

• Logan Square Mutual Aid distributes groceries and supplies to 200+ families a week, they are aiming to get monthly donations up to $5,100 a month and they are currently at $4,512. If you have a couple extra bucks, I can’t recommend setting up a recurring donation with them! These folks do amazing organizing work! 

• Some friends from Logan Square Mutual Aid have started hosting community meals at Paradise Garden in Logan. Here are the dates before they close up shop for the summer:
